St Teresa died in 1582 and was canonised just 40 years later by Pope Gregory XV. Her lasting spiritual wisdom led Pope Paul VI to declare her a Doctor of the Church in 1970 — the first woman to receive that honour — and bestow on her the title of Mater Spiritualium, or Mother of Spirituality.
